Back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, or at least in the Spring of 1988, I took a month off from life to work on SRL’s installation/performance — “Misfortunes of Desire: Acted Out an at Imaginary Location Symbolizing Everything Worth Having” — which took place in the parking lot of what was then called Shea Stadium. That involved scouring NYC’s derelict areas for interesting detritus (ranging from old windows to <shudder>half-tanned cowhides</shudder>, welding ridiculously toxic things together, and other ill-advised things.
As a reward for my efforts, in the performance I got to run the smoke machine (a WW2-era monster made for hiding entire ships) and, with Eric Werner (RIP), the flame thrower — which could burn through about two 55-gallon drums of diesel in about 3 minutes, as I recall.
